As mentioned in the previous post, there is not a lot left to complete my rendition of the Nostromo Crew Shirt. Basically, I just need to sew the patch on the shoulder, put the pin on the pocket flap and it’s done. Well, it’ll be done except for the gold wings, but I think they are going to be a whole series of posts all by themselves, because those guys are going to take a little bit of effort.
First things first, I needed to identify the correct patch to place on the shoulder. There are two versions of the Nostromo Ship’s Patch available for purchase out there: One with a light blue background, and one with a dark blue background.
So which one to use? A little bit of looking around solved this problem. As you can see in the production photo to the right, the patch with the light blue background was used on Dallas’s crew shirt. So what is the patch with the dark blue background for? At this point I have no idea. I have looked at photos of a lot of other garments from the film and haven’t really come across the patch with a dark blue background, but I must confess I have been looking mainly at the stuff Dallas wore, so maybe one of the other characters used it.
So, with the decision made to go with the light blue background, the rest is easy. The patch that I bought is an iron on, so I just positioned it where I wanted it on the right sleeve and ironed it into place. For good measure I threaded up the sewing machine with some blue/purple thread and stitched around the edge, so that baby isn’t going anywhere. So, for now, the Nostromo Crew Shirt is done!
